Phototherapy duration can be reduced by adding zinc salts. Uunconjugated bilirubin in the intestine (bilirubin and zinc can form a complex in physiologic pH) is precipitated by zinc salts; however, zinc toxicity is an issue that must be considered since theoretically bilirubin reduction by phototherapy may increase serum zinc levels, making additional zinc supplementation the potential cause of zinc toxicity. Objective: Estimation of serum zinc level alterations before and after phototherapy, in jaundiced newborns Materials and Methods: A prospective cohort study was performed at the newborn department of RMMCH. Healthy, full-term exclusively breast fed newborns with non-hemolytic jaundice were enrolled in the study. Participants were divided into two groups based on serum bilirubin levels (TSB<18 mg/dL and TSB >18mg/dL) at admission. Pre and post-phototherapy total serum zinc level was measured before and 12 – 24 hours after termination of phototherapy. Results: Phototherapy was associated with a significant increase in the serum zinc level in neonates with severe hyperbilirubinemia (TSB >18 mg/dL) but not in those with mild moderate hyperbilirubinemia (TSB<18 mg/dL). In addition, phototherapy caused a significant increase in the rate of zinc with potentially toxic levels (zinc > 200) in only neonates with severe hyperbilirubinemia. Conclusions: Phototherapy increases serum zinc level by reducing bilirubin level so that additional supplementation of this element can lead potentially to zinc toxicity.

Efficacy of Oral Zinc Sulfate Intake in Prevention of Neonatal Jaundice
Introduction:Jaundice is considered as a common clinical condition during infancy. Prevention of severe hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice) is safer and easier than current therapies, like phototherapy or blood exchange. In some animal studies, zinc was found effective in reducing jaundice. In this study we evaluated the effect of zinc sulfate on neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Materials and Methods: Th...

متن کاملAffect of zinc inhalation on body organisms in a mine
Introduction: Complications of zinc poisoning are analyzed in several studies. Among these, pulmonary fibrosis are reported. There is some doubts about chronic complications of zinc inhalation. Precise screening programs in zinc mine workers need previous knowledge of relative frequency of chronic complications due to zinc inhalation. So this study is held to recognize the complications and to ...

Background & Aim: Phototherapy plays a significant role in the treatment and prevention of hyperbilirubinemia in neonates. However, this treatment modality may itself result in the development of some complications. A lesser-known complication of the phototherapy is hypocalcemia. Some studies reported hypocalcemia accompanied by a decrease in serum melatonin concentration, yet this effect c...

Background: Approximately 60% of term neonates and 80% of preterm ones suffer from hyperbilirubinemia in theirfirst week of life. This study sought to characterize the therapeutic effect of oral zinc sulfate on neonatalhyperbilirubinemia. Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 70 term neonates with total serumbilirubin (TSB) level ≥ 20 mg/dl were enrolled. ...
